Once you have your director ID, you can view, update and manage your details online at any time.
Using your director ID
When you receive your director ID, you need to give it to the record-holder in your company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation. This might be your company secretary, another director, a contact person or an authorised agent of the company.
If youâre appointed as a director of any other companies or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations in the future, you need to give your director ID to the relevant record-holders.
There is no requirement to provide your director ID to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
View or update your details
If you have a myGovID with at least a Standard identity strength, you can log in to ABRS onlineExternal link.
Once you log in, you can view your director ID or update your details anytime. You can:
- check your director ID number and status, including when it was issued
- view things to do, actions in progress and past activity
- edit your profile preferences and some of your personal details.

Corporations Act directors
If your personal details change, you must notify your company within seven (7) days. Details may include your name, role or address.
The person (or people) responsible for keeping your company officeholdersâ details up-to-date must notify ASIC of the change. They need to do this within 28Â days to avoid late fees.
They can update officeholdersâ names and addresses and other details using ASICâs online services at Changing officeholder detailsExternal link.
CATSI Act directors
If youâre a director of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation, you must notify your corporation of any changes to your personal details within 14Â days. The corporation must notify the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) of the change within 28Â days.
Protect your identity
Your director ID confirms your identity and will in future show which companies youâre linked to.
We can only disclose your director ID to you or to:
- someone you give us permission to disclose to
- certain Commonwealth, state and territory government bodies
- courts and tribunals.
A director ID isnât governed by the same rules or laws that apply to a tax file number (TFN). An authorised agent or company secretary must ensure that information about a company and its officeholders is:
- handled according to their legal obligations
- securely stored.
The law doesnât authorise us to disclose director IDs to the public without the directorâs consent. For now, your director ID will not be searchable by the public. The Registrar will consult the community about what details can be disclosed and searched in the future.
Your legal obligations
Directors of companies have legal obligationsExternal link under the Corporations Act 2001. You must be actively involved in overseeing the companyâs affairs and give your written consent to be appointed as a director.
The Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act) sets out the duties required of directorsExternal link. Directors of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations also have duties that are consistent with directorsâ duties under common law and the Corporations Act 2001.
Directors are responsible under taxation law for ensuring their companyâs tax and super obligations are reported and paid on time. If your company does not pay certain liabilities by the due date, director penaltiesExternal link may apply.
